Billy Elliot and G Plan

Billy Elliot is a film we here at Mid Century Mobler could watch over and over again. It satisfies your thirst for dancing, T. Rex, and fascinating wallpaper. This time, we found some mid century nuggets! As most of you know, we travel to the UK a few times a year to bring English mid century pieces back to the U.S. One of our favorite (or should I say 'favourite') manufactures is G Plan. They were leaders of the UK's furniture market from 1952-1958, creating sleek designs for the middle class which have stood the test of time. The story of Billy Elliot is ladened with issues of class separation in which differences erupt during a tense time of social unrest. With this in mind, the interiors (and in particular, furnishings) of this film not only surround the characters as physical realities but bring to life a deeper understanding of their actions, intentions, and limitations. But that's not to over shadow the real message of the movie which is dance is electricity in your body. Elliot's ballet teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson, is part of a white collar family and situated in the suburbs. Amongst their decor, we noticed this beautiful mahogany credenza which surprisingly enough, we have in the shop! Another find was the G Plan Fresco Coffee Table in the Wilkinson's living room. Notice how Mrs. Wilkinson's wine glass didn't quite make it to the glass center, thus eliminating the potential of a wine ring. So in conclusion, if you know of anyone planning to stage their own production of Billy Elliot, please give them our number. Source: 1, 2
