Kai was born in 1929 in Denmark. He began his career as an apprentice to a cabinetmaker at the age of 16. He later studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills in woodworking, metalworking, and upholstery. In 1955, he opened his own furniture design studio, and over the next decade, he created some of his most iconic designs.
One of Kristiansen's most famous designs is the Model 42 chair, which he created in 1956.

The chair is a perfect example of Kristiansen's style, featuring a sleek, minimalistic design that is both elegant and functional. The chair is made of teak, rosewood, or oak and features a curved backrest that provides excellent support for the user.

Another notable design by Kristiansen is the Model 31 dining chair, which he created in 1957. The chair features a curved backrest and a comfortable seat, making it ideal for long dinner parties.

The chair is also lightweight and easy to move, making it perfect for modern living spaces.

Kristiansen's furniture designs are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts today. His designs are timeless and continue to inspire modern furniture designers. Many of his designs have been reissued, and they remain popular with homeowners who appreciate the clean lines and functionality of mid-century modern design.

In addition to his furniture design work, Kristiansen also served as a professor of furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He was also an active member of the Danish Design Council and helped to promote Danish design around the world.
