WHO IS EDMOND SPENCE?
There are a lot of mid century designers who's names are slowly forgotten over the years, and some (Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl, Adrian Pearsall) who have resurfaced to become some of the most recognizable names in mid century design. Nonetheless, it's usually those designers who have faded into obscurity that prove to have some of the most timeless and important work. Edmond J. Spence is one of those designers.
Although not clearly recognizable at first glance, Edmond Spence was an American designer who made a name for himself interpreting Danish Modernism in his own way and melding it with the atomic and organic influences of the mid – late 1950's. A little bit Deco, a little tiki, with a heavy atomic and Danish influence are the best way to describe most of his designs.
The majority of Spence's work seems to have been done from the early – late 1950's, and was produced by a handful of Swedish as well as Mexican manufacturers (Industria Mueblera). He's quickly becoming one of our favorite designers.
