Walnut Nightstands in a Matched Pair by John Kapel, 1960s
A Matched Pair, and the Rest of the Line
Single nightstands surface constantly. Matched pairs from the same workshop, in the same wood, finished by the same hand, are what buyers wait years for. This pair has stayed together since the 1960s.
Walnut nightstands of this width sit closer to a small chest than to the narrow bedside tables sold today, which suit a bed with room on either side rather than one pushed into a corner. The drawer takes what a lamp base and a book leave behind, and the surface holds more than a phone and a glass.
The tall and low dressers from this same Kapel line are also on the floor, making a complete bedroom possible in one wood and one hand. Mid Century Møbler builds most of its collection from European furniture, so this run of American walnut will not repeat.

FAQs
Why buy the pair rather than one?
Separating a matched pair is difficult to undo. A second nightstand in the same wood, width, and period is not something that can be sourced to order, and an approximate match reads as a mismatch once both sit either side of a bed.
Will they suit a bed of any height?
Check the mattress top against the case height before ordering. Mid-century nightstands generally sit lower than modern equivalents, which looks intentional beside a low platform bed and awkward beside a tall upholstered one.
Can they be used away from a bedroom?
Frequently. A pair works either side of a sofa, or singly as a lamp table in an entryway. The proportions here suit either use, and the walnut sits comfortably against both painted walls and exposed brick.
Are they sold with the dressers?
No. Each Kapel piece is listed separately. We can advise on the full group and arrange a single delivery if you are taking more than one, which is worth asking about before ordering piece by piece.
