This rocking chair was designed by Frank Reenskaug and produced by Bramin in Denmark during the 1950s. Built in solid afromosia, a dense African hardwood often used as a warmer alternative to teak, the chair combines a gently curved rocker base with the clean lines typical of Danish modern design. A comfortable, sculptural addition to a living room or nursery.

Afromosia Rocking Chair by Frank Reenskaug for Bramin, 1950s
The Wood Nobody Asks For by Name
Afromosia arrived in Danish workshops when the teak supply tightened, and most buyers today have never heard of it. That works in favor of anyone who has. Pieces in afromosia are harder to find, which keeps them on the floor longer and out of the bidding that follows a well-known teak name.
An afromosia rocking chair carries that anonymity well. The wood is denser than teak, which matters for a frame that flexes with every movement and bears its weight through curved runners rather than four static legs. Model 182 has stayed in production histories and auction records for that reason rather than for its material.
Mid Century Møbler brings European furniture back from Denmark several times a year. Rockers appear far less often than case pieces, and afromosia examples even less often.

FAQs
How much floor space does a rocker actually need?
More than the footprint suggests, because the runners travel. Leave clearance behind for the backward stroke, and keep it off a wall where the crest rail will mark the paint. A rug underneath changes the motion, so try it on your own flooring before deciding where it lives.
Does afromosia need different care from teak?
Not in practice. It takes oil the same way and darkens gradually with light. The denser grain shows scratches slightly less readily, which is useful on a chair that gets moved.
Will the joints loosen over time?
Rockers work harder than static chairs, so joinery is the thing to inspect. Ours are gone through before they reach the floor. Ask us what was addressed on this one if that matters to you.
Is it comfortable enough for long sitting?
Danish rockers of this era favor upright posture over deep lounging. Sit in it at the Berkeley showroom if you can, since preferences here vary more than photographs convey.
