Paul McCobb's Planner Group Credenza With Hutch, 1950s
This credenza with hutch is from Paul McCobb's Planner Group line, produced by Winchendon Furniture Company in the USA during the 1950s. The maple case pairs clean, modular lines with generous storage. The lower credenza offers cabinet and drawer space, while the hutch above adds display and storage height. A cornerstone piece for a dining room or living room in a mid-century interior.
Storage That Goes Up Instead of Along
A credenza with hutch offers a practical solution when a room has limited space. Rather than extending further across the room, the storage makes use of the space above, adding useful capacity without taking up additional floor area.
This one stands narrower than most credenzas of its era, which makes the hutch particularly useful. The same amount of storage arranged horizontally would need considerably more wall. Alcoves, chimney breasts, and the shorter dining walls can all accommodate this more compact arrangement.
McCobb designed Planner Group as a system, with pieces intended to work together rather than stand entirely on their own. We currently have several other credenzas with hutches on the floor, including Danish examples in teak. Mid Century Møbler specializes largely in European furniture, making it easy to compare pieces from both design traditions in one place.
