The PH 2/1 Pendant is a member of the three-shade family and is one of 19 versions available today. Approximately one thousand models have been produced over the years and consisted of table, floor and wall lamps, as well as a number of chandeliers, which were popular in the 30s for lighting private homes with high ceilings. There were countless combination options. The lights were available in different colors, as well as a range of sizes. The first shades were made of metal with a painted underside, such as white, gold or silver depending on whether diffuse, warm or cold light was desired. Glass was later introduced to the three-shade system. In addition to the downward-directed light, glass lamps illuminated the room. PH was the first person to pursue a scientific approach to light and use the logarithmic spiral as a basis. By using a design based on the logarithmic spiral, he achieved even distribution of light over the entire curve of the shade. This even light distribution, together with the diffuse reflection through the glass, made it possible to control glare and shadow. Each shade reduces the amount of light equally due to their distance from the light source. The PH light model numbers refer to the shade size. Each top shade had a corresponding set of middle and lower shades. In the pure models, such as the 2/2, the top shade has a size of about 20 cm, with corresponding lower shades. The PH 3½-3 Glass Pendant is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. Poul Henningsen devoted most of his life to taming electric light. He based his three-shade design on a logarithmic spiral to make optimum use of the light source. He was constantly doing calculations and tests. The form of the shades was determined by the way they were required to shape and reflect the light, and the lamp was designed to be glare-free. The white opal glass shades soften the overall look of the lamp and illuminate its surroundings with a perfect, harmonious and glare-free light that only the classic three-shade system is capable of emitting. To mark Poul Henningsen’s 120th birthday on 9 September, Louis Poulsen is launching the new PH 3½-3 pendant. The PH 3½-3 pendant is based on Poul Henningsen’s original drawings from the late1920s and early 1930s, featuring his renowned three-shade system. The pendant has metal shades, available in green, yellow, red and white. The fixture housing is silk mat brown and made of copper. All colours are based on Poul Henningsen’s colour universe. Like the designer, the fixtures are colourful! As an extra feature, all shades have a white painted rolled edge, accentuating the familiar profile of the three-shade fixture and creating beautiful optical symmetry. The shades are pressed at Louis Poulsen’s factory in Vejen, by Louis Poulsen’s own staff – a craft only very few are trained in. Although the fixture is over 80 years old, it is both modern and classic at the same time, making it ideally suited to a broad range of interior design environments. It is seen as a charming, rustic, functional and unpretentious fixture. The PH 3½-3 pendant is a piece of Danish lighting design history. Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 as a follow-up to his celebrated three-shade system. The fixture emits both downward and lateral light, thus illuminating itself. In the PH 5 Classic, a warmer tone of light is created by the inside red cone and a small blue reflector. The PH 5 Mini, with a diameter of 30 cm, is a scaled down version of the iconic PH 5 (50 cm in diameter). Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to constant changes to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers. The PH 5 was introduced as a classic new product, and no one knew at the time that it would eventually become synonymous with the PH light. Irrespective of how the light is installed or the light source used, the PH 5 is and remains completely glare-free. The pendant was christened PH 5 due to the 50 cm diameter of the main shade. Poul Henningsen wanted to improve the colour reproduction characteristics of the light source in the PH 5. Small red and blue shades were therefore inserted to supplement the colour in the part of the spectrum where the eye is least sensitive – the red and blue areas – thereby subduing the light in the middle yellow-green region where the eye is most sensitive. The PH 5 design has been regularly updated as light sources have developed. Like the PH 5, the PH 5 Mini is available in the classic white version, a modern white model and in six colour versions, where the colour is darkest at the top and gradually lightens moving down from shade to shade. The struts are purple on the ‘classic’ model and bronze-coloured on the other seven versions. The reflector ring colour contrasts with the other hues. To celebrate the 60th anniversary in 2018 of this beloved pendant, Louis Poulsen released the PH 5 and PH 5 Mini in an edition that pairs copper shades and white tiers – and in 2019 with brass shades. The new metallic-and-white combination highlights Henningsen’s shade system design and adds new dynamism to one of his most recognized forms, with the mirror-like metal tiers reflecting their surroundings. The PH Artichoke was designed in 1958 by Poul Henningsen for the Langelinie Pavillonen, a modernist Copenhagen restaurant where it continues to enchant visitors today. With its world-famous unique sculptural design, the PH Artichoke is viewed as an international design icon. The fixture has 72 leaves, positioned so as to provide totally glare-free light from any angle. To ensure a high level of quality, much of the production process is still carried out by hand. The renowned light fixture has kept its original copper finish, which to this date illuminates spaces with its warm and ambient lighting. With the brushed and polished steel as well as white painted metal models, further members have been added to the PH Artichoke family, highlighting its versatility and timeless silhouette. In 2018, Louis Poulsen celebrated the design’s 60th anniversary with an introduction of a beautiful brushed brass edition. When Henningsen originally designed the iconic PH Artichoke he opted for solid copper leaves with a satin finish and with a rose finish on the leaves’ interiors. This combination lent an exceptional warmth to the lamp’s organic form and beautifully reflected the light from its hidden source. The light from the copper rose edition, in particular, creates an inviting ambiance. Poul Henningsen designed the three-shade system during 1925/1926. The first lights using the system were designed for an exhibition in Paris. His work with Louis Poulsen continued until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to create glare-free lighting; aiming to direct light where it was most needed, and creating soft shadows while using incandescent bulbs as a light source. PH 3/2 Table is a member of the three-shade family and is one of 19 versions available today. Approximately one thousand different models have been produced over the years and consisted of table, floor and wall lamps, as well as a number of different chandeliers, which were popular in the 30s for lighting private homes with high ceilings. There were countless combination options. The lights were available in different colors, as well as a range of sizes. The first shades were made of metal with a painted undersurface, such as white, gold or silver depending on whether diffuse, warm or cold light was desired. Glass was later introduced for the three-shade system. In addition to the downward-directed light, glass lamps illuminated the room. PH was the first person to pursue a scientific approach to light and use the logarithmic spiral as a basis. By using a design based on the logarithmic spiral he achieved even distribution of light over the entire curve of the shade. This even light distribution, together with the diffuse reflection through the glass, made it possible to control glare and shadow. Each shade reduces the amount of light equally, due to their distance from the light source. The PH light model numbers refer to the shade size. Each top shade had a corresponding set of middle and lower shades. In the pure models, such as the 2/2, the top shade has a size of about 20 cm, with corresponding lower shades. PH 3/2 Table consists of an approximately 30 cm top shade, but uses lower shades from the 2/2 model. These hybrid models were introduced due to the desire to hang the pendants at lower heights. The system was also used for wall, table and floor lamps.

MEASUREMENTS: Lamp Height: 18.6″ tall
Lamp Base Width: 6.1″ diameter
Lamp Shade Width: 11.3″ diameter
Cord: 10′ long

The fixture is designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. The fixture is designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. The PH 3½-2½ Glass Table lamp was designed in 1928 and is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. The first PH Table lamp was completed in early 1927 and launched as an alternative to low-pitched hanging lamps. The white opal glass shades soften the overall look of the lamp and illuminate its surroundings with a perfect, harmonious and glare-free light that only the classic three-shade system is capable of emitting. The two bottom handblown opal glass shades ensure a large glare-free light surface, making optimum use of the light source to provide comfortable, functional lighting. The PH 3½-2½ Glass Table lamp was designed in 1928 and is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. The majority of the light is directed downwards, and the opal acrylic shades provide comfortable room lighting. The red hue of the top reflector helps give the light a warmer glow. Poul Henningsen designed the three-shade system back in 1925-1926. The first lights using the system were designed by PH in cooperation with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. This partnership continued up until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to create glare-free light, direct light where it was most needed, and create soft shadows, using incandescent bulbs as a light source. PH 80 is a member of the three-shade family which numbers 18 lights today, including three for outdoor use. Thus PH did not just design a light, but an entire system – around a thousand different models have been produced over the years. This wide selection consisted of table, floor and wall lamps, as well as a number of different chandeliers, which were very popular in the 30s for lighting private homes from high ceilings. There were countless combination options. The lights were available in different colours, as well as a range of sizes. Glass was later introduced for the three-shade system. In addition to the downward-directed light, glass lamps illuminated the room. In the ‘pure’ models, such as the 2/2, the top shade has a size of about 20 cm, with corresponding lower shades. PH 80 is based on the same three-shade design centred on the logarithmic spiral. The material is opal acrylic, and the top shade is red to provide warm and atmospheric lighting. The light model number does not refer to the top shade diameter as is normally the case for three-shade models. The light was created in 1974 after PH’s death to mark 80 years since his birth – hence the name PH 80.

MEASUREMENTS: Lamp Height:51.7″ tall
Lamp Shade Width: 21.5″ wide
Lamp Base: 12.3″ diameter
Cord: 9′ long

The fixture is designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards.
